Organizing the Browser

I got ask last week how to organize the browser so i decided to show you how i do mine, and how to do it.

Here’s an idea of what my Browser Organisation looks like

I use an Organizational Code to order it. I found that method to be more effective over time because of users difficulty to comply to a system. The easier, the better when it comes to crunch time.

You can come up with your own set of code, i usually try to stay close to Sheet Naming. On some larger projects i will also add a second level of organisation, Type of View(Working, Temporary,User, etc..) will cover that in another post.

So here’s how to do it

First you need to add a Project Parameter (Manage | Project Parameters)image

In the Parameter Properties dialog”

  • Name: Organisational Code
  • Discipline: Common
  • Type of Parameter: Text
  • Group parameter under: Other (This will make sure it’s at the bottom of the Element Properties dialog)
  • Categories: Viewsimage

Now select one(or multiple views) and go to Element Properties

Under Other enter the appropriate Code.

I find it very important to provide a clear list to users. It’s also good to preset some views in the template. But since you can’t cover all view type in a template (most of the time) make sure they have the list.image

The last step is to have the Project Browser display according to our Code. Open the Project Browser by Right-Click the top level (Views) and selecting Properties

Switch to any other Type since we can’t modify all (kindda make sense anyway) and click Duplicate. Finally enter the name for the new Project Browser organisation

Open the Folders by clicking Editimage

Then it’s entirely up to you to organize it the way you want. The very important thing is to make sure you select Organisational Code for the first Group by.

If any views doesn’t have the Organisational Code Parameter filled, Revit will replace it with ???
